Your Elevator Pitch – A Sales Tool

In about one minute – how’s your first impression?

Sellevator PitchIf used properly, your elevator pitch may be the most important sales tool in your marketing arsenal. Your introductory sales pitch is usually your first marketing attempt with any new engagement.

If you succeed in attracting someone who needs your service, it can convert or bring to action the next step in the sales process. Do well and your meeting may result in creating a desire for more information which can lead to more opportunities.

What exactly is an elevator pitch? Wikipedia tells us that: An elevator pitch is an overview of an idea for a product, service, or project. The name reflects the fact that an elevator pitch can be delivered in the time span of an elevator ride.

It is that initial meeting when someone asks you “what do you do?” Your objective should be to create enough interest that they want to know more. Even if they are not one of your “target customers”, you want to leave a good enough impression that they will talk positively about you to others.

Although the term “pitch” has a negative connotation, I feel it best describes your purpose, because we are all selling something, and you should do it in the most effective manner that you can. Your listener is evaluating and deciding in their mind whether they want to further engage with you from this initial meeting.

The basic elements of your pitch should include what you do and what you can do for them and how to learn more. You should include a call to action which consists of how to find more information or connect with you. Your pitch success is measured by the resulting subsequent inquiries.

I think everyone should publish their elevator pitch with a video online today and use the internet to provide a link to more information. If you find yourself in a live meeting, you should give your pitch naturally, provide a business card if asked, and give an easy to remember URL for the call to action element.

Use Google Analytics or another web tool to measure your progress as your pitch evolves. Find opportunities to share your pitch. And, accept the fact that you are selling yourself, so you might as well do it in the best way you can.

Bottom line is that your Sellevator Pitch is the first tool you must master to succeed in business. It is the first sell that you must make in order to earn the privilege to sell more.

Today’s savvy buyer cannot be fooled by manipulation of your message either. This is where you must display YOUR authenticity at your best. People will buy YOU before they buy your product or service. Your initial pitch is to sell them on YOU and create a desire that they want to know more.
